The chicken, yams and cabbage were delicious. 10/10. The chicken had the perfect crunch and seasoning. The yams are the perfect sweetness, not too sweet. Cabbage was amazing and tastes like grandma made it. The ribs and corn bread were dry. Get the chicken for sure
I am from the south and let me just say that this is amazing fried chicken! The employees were nice and helpful. Order in the back, let them know what sides you want as you progress towards the register. There were like 2-3 seats inside, but some tables outside. Highly recommend getting the chicken "smothered" but the gravy on the side. The chicken stayed crunchy by the time we ate it (30 mins later) and wasn't soggy at all. That gravy though... that gravy sticks to the chicken when you dip it and is so delicious! The collards were great, the mashed potatoes were good, the macaroni and cheese had good flavor but was too dry for my liking. The cornbread was huge and so good! Note/Tip: if you have a large order and you're not eating there, bring your own bag(s). The bag handle broke for the person in front of us and ours broke after about 5 mins of walking. Luckily we brought our own bags and just transferred the contents.
The chicken is good , I purchased the 10 piece family meal that comes with six cornbread pieces and three large sides for you to pick from . The total was forty two dollars and fifty cents . The service is pretty much to go, there are only three stools inside the place and it's kinda hot inside , the service was also fast and friendly . Worth a try no doubt about it .
(This review is for delivery, which came fairly promptly.) We ordered the 3-pieces of chicken as well as the 2-pieces that come with ribs. Sides: yams x 2, collard greens, and Mac and cheese. These came with cornbread. And we got a banana pudding. The chicken was pretty delicious -- my order had 1 breast, 1 thigh, 1 wing. Loved the batter. Thought the bird was still nice and moist. For me, this is the classic fried chicken, so thumbs up. The ribs were good too -- nice little kick of spice to them. The meat fell off the bone. I thought the cornbread was pretty good too. Cornbread can go wrong in a lot of ways -- often it's too dry. But this was also moist and not too sweet. I wasn't that impressed with the sides, however. The collards were okay. The Mac and cheese was fine. But the yams -- damn they were soooo sweet. Almost inedibly so. Banana pudding isn't my thing, but the husband loved it. This was a lot of food for two people -- that is, two entrees and a dessert -- and I'm happy we'll have this again as leftovers tomorrow for sure.
I have been to this location about 3 times but want to recount my most recent visit. So, its Juneteenth. Im a Central Park at a concert. At 8 pm, my sisters text's me " Charles Pan Fried Chicken" . I know where im at and my eyes instantly water at the thought of the fried chicken which I haven't had in over 2 years. I go to check what time they close, its at 10 pm. So every 10 minutes after this text, I am looking down at my phone. Im thinking through how fast it would take me to walk from E 65th and 5th to W 72nd and amsterdam! The concert lets out at 9:20pm. I hightail it out of the park and start run walking. I get out of the park by around 9:28pm. I make a mad dash to Charles's. I call and no answer. I finally get there at 9:44 pm. I see that ppl from the concert were already there and they go yeah we left early, priorities. The guy who order before says there is only catfish and turkey wings left. I sigh in disbelief. I walk out. I walk back in and opt for a side of Mac and cheese because its good. I see chicken in the back being fried. Im on the phone with my sister giving her a play by play. The cashier/manager goes I guess he didn't listen to me to stop frying chicken. The food gods blessed me. I got some wings and breast. Made fresh. Some yams and corn bread. I left a lucky girl. The love for Charles' is real. Go on and get you sum!
TWU Local 100 had their Family Day on June 1st, 2024, at the scenic Maimonides Park, in the heart of Coney Island, adjacent to all the big rides. Charles's Pan Fried Chicken was one of the vendors at the event. They served their pan-fried chicken with sides (potato salad, baked Mac and cheese, collard greens, yams), funnel cake fries, burgers and hot dogs, fish and chips, pulled pork with coleslaw, barbecue chicken, strawberry cheesecake, and banana pudding. I had their pan-fried chicken with potato salad and baked Mac and cheese, funnel cake fries, fish and chips, and strawberry cheesecake. Everything was very good, but my favorite was the potato salad, baked Mac and cheese, chips aka fries, and the strawberry cheesecake. The strawberry cheesecake was in little cups and it had really good flavor. Charles's Pan Fried Chicken also collaborated with 360 Degree Video Booth Rental. It was a lot of fun to do a 360 degree video. The staff at Charles's Pan Fried Chicken and 360 Degree Video Booth Rental were both wonderful and friendly.
True to its reputation, the fried chicken here is well coated with a blend of spices (not unlike, charmingly, KFC's Original Recipe). Each bite contains a good bit of flavor and soul, and the meat is appropriately tender. I do wish the skin were crispier, but alas... often a tradeoff exists in the world of fried chicken in flavor versus crunch. The sides carry potential yet can really do much better. The collard greens, sensible on their own though not yet compelling, could seriously use meaty flavors (e.g., bacon or turkey). I really believe this dish is missing something. The cornbread, similarly, can also use some gravy to round out the flavors and textures. Indoor seating is limited to just three countertop seats. They don't puncture the takeout boxes with holes, which can be troublesome when the food contained inside is fried.
I've heard Charles' name-dropped as the best fried chicken in the city, and after seeing it profiled in Netflix's High On The Hog (great show!) I had to check it out. To say it upfront, the food lives up to the hype! The 72nd St location is pretty small with just three counter seats and two standing tables outside. Try to snag one so you can eat the chicken as fresh as possible, otherwise you can opt for takeout as most do and eat in Central Park nearby. Really friendly and efficient staff too who hold the place down. I got the $10 special with two pieces and a side, which is a great deal and available all day. It's not on the menu but it's advertised on the window, so just ask and you shall receive. You can also specify dark or white meat. The chicken doesn't have any bells or whistles - not spicy or anything and pretty light breading - but it is perfectly juicy and really lets the crisp skin shine. I got the okra as my side, which is cooked with corn in a thick tomato-based stew packed with flavor and not slimy at all. The cornbread that comes with every order is also moist with just a touch of sweetness; I don't always love cornbread but this one was great. The good price made it all too easy to add a sweet tea which was as good as I expected. I had been missing the food I'd had on my trips to the South and Charles' absolutely matched that quality. Definitely want to return to try the fried fish and mac and cheese!
They have a great $10 lunch special, especially for the area! If you happen to find yourself near the red 72nd Street stop and want a cheap lunch, Charles's is the way to go! I got their 2 piece fried chicken (you have the option of white or dark meat) and 1 side and 1 cornbread lunch special and I was surprised at how filling it was! There's lots of sides to choose from--I was very close to ordering an additional side!--but I got the okra. If there's okra, there's me! The chef just happened to be there when I ordered and he served me and was super friendly! Only downside is there isn't too much seating inside, but if you're in a grab and go mood, this place can't be beat!
